The second half of the 20th century was a period of rapid population growth; the world’s population doubled from about three billion in 1960 to six billion by 2000. At the same time, there was a sharp increase in the number of nation states, so that people moving in search of economic opportunity and freedom from persecution were more likely to cross international borders.
Over the past quarter century, the world’s population increased by 40 percent while the number of international migrants doubled to 250 million.
Joe Chamie, former director of the UN Population Division a, will provide an entertaining long-term perspective on current population and migration patterns and issues, including the US dilemma of what to do about the estimated 11 million unauthorized foreigners in the US and shrinking populations in many European countries.
