Kevin Johnson comments on Trump Immigration Policy Shift for San Francisco Chronicle

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for the San Francisco Chronicle on the Trump administration’s decision to end a program that granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to immigrants from El Salvador who came to the United States following devastating earthquakes in their country in 2001. Dean Johnson said the dangers of gang violence in El Salvador posed by groups such as the MS-13 could be grounds for the government to continue to grant protected status to the immigrants.

“President Trump has recognized gang violence in the United States and the dangerousness of MS-13,” said Johnson. “Given that level of violence, one could claim that the U.S. should consider the extension of TPS status to El Salvadorans based on rampant gang violence, not the earthquake of 2001.”
