Human trafficking or a guest worker program? H-2A’s systemic issues result in catastrophic violations

Prism Reports did a piece covering the expansion of the H-2A program. GMC Visiting Scholar Daniel Costa and GMC Affiliate Philip Martin elaborated on the standards that are enforced in the agricultural sector. Migrant deaths in Mexico put spotlight on US policy that shifted immigration enforcement south

GMC affiliate Raquel Aldana for The Conversation. In this article, she discusses the 39 migrant deaths that occurred in a detention facility in Ciudad Juárez. She further speaks on the realities that the migrants face in the detention facilities despite having immigration policies in place to prevent unjust treatment. As well as the type of policies that “have either forced migrants presenting themselves at the U.S. southern border to apply for asylum while remaining in Mexico or expelled them back to their countries of origin”.

Immigration and the Shortage of American Workers

GMC Director Giovanni Peri for Econofact and in this podcast episode regarding immigration and the labor force, Peri states “In the last 10 years, as I said, large part of immigrants have been college-educated. They have increased the supply of their group, but the wages and employment of the group has actually increased even for natives.”

Economic Report on the President

GMC Director Giovanni Peri and GMC Gaetano Basso’s paper on internal mobility was cited by the 2023 Economic Report of the President (Pg. 201). Their findings relate to increasing immigration as a way of boosting the U.S. labor supply.

Tijuana call centers are a refuge for some deportees

GMC Deputy Director, Robert McKee Irwin, was featured on KPBS San Diego by Gustavo Solís. Solís published a two part story focusing on the stories of migrants from the Humanizing Deportation archive including comments made by Irwin. In the second part, it talks about how call centers in Tijuana provide decent jobs and wages but also an environment for deportees to comfortably be themselves and be welcomed.

Family detentions? Why Biden is tacking right on immigration.

GMC affiliate, Brad Jones was quoted in the Christian Science Monitor in a story about Title 42 and the Biden Administration's handling of border policies. What is being seen now is that the Biden Administration might be seeing a struggle in balancing the U.S-Mexico border. Professor Jones “suggests increasing the number of shelters at the border and connecting local governments with nongovernmental organizations that can provide assistance.”
