GMC Director Giovanni Peri's commentary on the current job programs set up for Ukrainian refugees was featured in the New York Times. Peri states that refugees may find themselves resettled in their new communities for longer than expected and that job programs focused on integrating Ukrainian women into the labor force have great potential due to their social networks and the range of jobs that they can fill.

GMC affiliates Kevin R. Johnson and Joanna Regulska were separately brought in as guests on Cap Radio's Insight with Vicki Gonzalez. Kevin Johnson was brought on to discuss reports of racism in the Ukrainian refugee crisis.

Joanna Regulska was brought on the show to discuss the current displacement of Ukrainian women following the war and taking care of international students.

Comments on the challenges faced by Ukrainian women and girls during the refugee crisis by GMC Affiliate Joanna Regulska were recently featured in an ABC 10 article on the free document-saving Article 26 Backpack service offered by UC Davis for Ukrainian refugees.

Humanizing Deportation's recent work in Tijuana was featured in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science research newsletter. This story follows the community partnerships, outreach, and collaborative research that Robert McKee Irwin's Humanizing Deportation team has been able to develop in recent months through a Public Impact Research Initiative grant from UC Davis's Office of Public Scholarship and Engagement, which has hosted a series of blog posts on the project.

GMC Director Giovanni Peri was featured in a recent episode of Econofact Chats discussing his recent memo on current labor shortages and the migrant shortfall as well as the larger role of migrants in the US economy.

Robert McKee Irwin's Humanizing Deportation project was featured in the November issue of (Trans)Fronteriza, published in Buenos Aires, Argentina, by the Working Group on Borders: Mobilities, Identities and Businesses of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) (pp. 44-47: https://www.clacso.org/en/boletin-11-transfronteriza/).

GMC Affiliate Brad Jones was recently interviewed by both Arizona-based radio station KVOA and newspaper Nogales International, giving his insights into the rising death rates of migrants in their attempts to cross the border. Jones cites U.S. immigration policy, climate change, and militarization along the border as contributing forces in migrant mortality.

During fall quarter 2021, working with colleagues from UABC Mexicali, Irwin cotaught a highly interactive undergraduate seminar: "Gender and Migration in the Border Cities Mexicali and Tijuana," engaging a group of 21 students (6 from UC Davis, 15 from UABC Mexicali) studying across the fields of Spanish, Economics and International Relations. The course culminated in group projects in which transnational teams of students designed materials to assist migrants in border cities of Baja California. The project was recently featured in the campus publication Gaceta UABC.

A new report by GMC External Affiliate Daniel Costa of the Economic Policy Institute highlights how tech firms systematically underpay H1-B visa workers. The combined losses of this wage theft are measured to be at least $95 million, raising questions about potential legislation to curb H1-B visa abuse.
